A pulmonary function test, or breathing test, helps to evaluate how much air
your lungs can hold, how quickly you can move air in and out of your lungs,
and
how your lungs add oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the blood. This
test
is performed to diagnose certain types of lung disease, to determine the
cause
of shortness of breath, or to measure whether occupational exposure to
contaminants have affected lung function.
A pulmonary function test is the key to diagnosis and management of lung
diseases. With the increase in asthma throughout the population, the
pulmonary
function test has become of vital importance. A registered pulmonary
function
technologist performs a pulmonary function test. Appointments are made to
the
pulmonary function lab, here at Mid-Michigan Physicians, through a referral
from your physician. The testing takes approximately one
hour.
